SLAVE:My True Story by Mende Nazer and Damien Lewis
When Mende Nazer was just twelve years old, her childhood was snatched from her. One night in 1993, Arab raiders attacked her Nuba village in Sudan. The raiders kidnapped 31 young children, and Mende was taken to Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. Then began her seven dark years of enslavement. When she was sent to work for another master in England, she made a dramatic break for freedom. The way Mende has written this book, it gives the reader a chance to feel Mende’s strength and pain. A must read biography.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list. What Clay discovers changes his life forever.Thirteen Reasons Why is a very confusing novel, but once you start reading it, it’s hard to put it back down. It’s a great book and teens can learn a whole lot from it.

In October the Concord Library offered a short story contest for teens during our One City, One Book event. The book used for short-story inspiration was Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon. The Concord Rotary generously donated a first place scholarship of $400 and a second place scholarship of $100 to the winners. We received several wonderful short stories, but our judges could only choose two stories. We want to share these stories with you, and remember, keep an eye out for future contests and you might see your story featured here too!
